High-Performance Action Architecture for Nintendo Switch™

A high-fidelity rhythm and combat experience designed to push the limits of the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con motion sensors. By decoupling the Joy-Cons from the console, the game transforms the hardware into two high-precision plasma blades.

The primary goal for Plasma Blade was to deliver a frame-perfect combat experience on mobile-based hardware. Developing for the Nintendo Switch required a deep focus on CPU overhead reduction and GPU memory overhead, ensuring that the fast-paced action remained fluid at a constant 60 FPS.

Platform Expert Nintendo Switch™ Optimization Implemented a rigorous profiling workflow using Unity Frame Debugger to identify bottlenecks. Optimized draw calls by 35% through custom static/dynamic batching and texture atlas compression specialized for the Switch’s Tegra X1 architecture.
Core Systems Advanced C# Architecture Developed a decoupled, event-driven architecture to manage complex combat states. This ensured that the physics engine and the AI logic never competed for the same CPU cycles, resulting in zero frame-drops during peak combat sequences.
UX & Performance Input & Latency Management To meet the standards of high-level action games, I implemented a custom input-buffer system to handle the Joy-Con™ and Pro Controller polling rates, achieving sub-frame latency for parries and dodges.

Technical Implementation

Dual-Wielding 6-Axis Motion Tracking Independent tracking of Left and Right Joy-Cons using advanced sensor fusion (Gyroscope + Accelerometer). Implemented signal filtering to eliminate drift and ensure 1:1 spatial mapping for high-speed slashing.
Haptic Immersion (HD Rumble) Custom frequency patterns that simulate the “hum” of the blade and the physical resistance when slicing through blocks. Distinct tactile feedback for “Perfect Slices” vs. “Clashes.”
Low-Latency Performance Optimized physics engine to handle high-frequency collision detection at a locked 60 FPS, crucial for rhythm-based precision.
